The 81st Central States Fair kicked off in Rapid City with an opening ceremony that mixed gratitude, a few laughs, and plenty of local flavor. Past president Jim Hunt opened things with a prayer before turning the mic over to new president Quentin Riggins, who thanked the board, staff, city and county partners, and everyone who helps keep the fair going. Governor Larry Rhoden traded a few stories with Hunt about their old bull-riding days, Mayor Jason Salamun delivered a proclamation making it Central States Fair Week, and Delaney Apple shared a traditional Lakota song and blessing. Longtime fair manager Ron Jeffries closed it out by talking about the “Where Generations Gather” theme and the special milestones being marked this year.
